Sai Inspires - 1st July 2007

Unless you cleanse the mind with Love, the full moon of spiritual wisdom cannot shine therin. The recital of the Name, the observance of vows and vigils, of fasts and festivals may scintillate on the inner sky of the mind as stars stud the sky; but, until the lamp of love is lit, the darkness will not vanish.

- Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 12, pg. 2483.

Love is God; live in love. - Baba
WHAT INCENTIVE DO WE NEED?

For this Sunday we have the transcript of a talk delivered by a student, Sri Toto Goyal, in the Morning Prayer session of Swami’s University a few weeks ago.

A pair of economists conducted a study at 10 day care centers in Haifa , Israel . They observed that there were on an average eight late pick ups per day care center per week. After four weeks they introduced a 3$ fine on every parent arriving more than ten minutes late per day. For why should the day care center look after the children for free? After the fine was introduced, the number of late pickups promptly went…up. Before long there were twenty late pickups per week, more than double the original average. This incentive had clearly backfired.

Economics is at root the study of incentives: how people get what they want or need especially when others want or need the same thing. A typical economist believes that the world hasn’t yet invented a problem he cannot solve given a free hand to design the proper incentive scheme. The solution may not always be pretty, but the original problem rest assured, will be fixed. An incentive is a bullet, a lever, a key: an often tiny object with astonishing power to change a situation. We all learn to respond to incentives from the outset of life, be they negative or positive. An incentive is simply a means of urging people to do more of a good thing and less of a bad thing. But, someone: an economist, a parent or a politician has to think it up.

There are three basic flavors to an incentive: economic, social and moral. Very often a single incentive scheme will include all these varieties. For instance, in the recent anti-smoking campaign in the US a $3 per pack ‘sin tax’ is a powerful economic incentive against their purchase. Banning them in restaurants and other public places is a strong social incentive and when the US govt. asserts that terrorists raise money by selling black market cigarettes that acts as a rather jarring moral incentive.

So coming back to the day care center in Israel , “what did go wrong?” Well probably the $3 fine was too small, at a total of 60$ a parent could afford to be late throughout the month. And as baby sitting goes, that’s pretty cheap. But there was another problem too. The fine substituted an economic incentive ($3 fine) for a moral one (the guilt the parents were supposed to feel when they came late). For a few dollars, the parents could buy off their guilt. In the 17 th week of study, when the fine was eliminated, the numbers didn’t change. Now, the parents could arrive late, pay nothing and feel no guilt. Such is the strange yet powerful nature of incentives. A slight tweak can produce drastic and often unforeseen results.

In another study that researchers conducted in the 1970s, which like the day care center in Israel , pitted a moral incentive against an economic one. They discovered that people tend to donate less blood when they are given a small stipend rather than just being praised for their altruism. The fee turned a noble act of charity into a painful way of making a few dollars and it wasn’t worth it. What if the blood donors had been offered a bigger fee? Surely the numbers would have changed dramatically, but something would have changed dramatically as well. For every incentive has a dark side. If a pint of blood was worth something like 500 or 5000 dollars, we can be sure that plenty of people would take notice. They might literally steal blood at knife point. They might pass off animal blood as their own. They might circumvent the donation limits by using fake ID’s. Whatever the incentive, whatever the situation, dishonest people will try to gain an advantage by whatever means possible or rather necessary.

But then, which side of the incentive do we choose? Which of the flavors in an incentive scheme actually prompt us to do what we do? The economic, the social or the moral? In today’s world, morality doesn’t find a place in mans endeavor. Money is the start, the means and the end of doing anything and everything. Bhagwan says, “Money comes and goes but morality comes and grows.” The 3$ fine was introduced to make the parents feel guilty about the trouble they were causing the day care center, but you already know what actually happened.

Well then, think again, ‘Do we need to choose any incentive at all?’, ‘Do we need something material to prompt us to do what we do?’ Look around yourself and you’ll see an army of people to whom the incentive or lets say the fruit of action does not matter at all. Well, if not that, look within yourself and see yourself, that self that does something as an offering to our Lord without thinking about the fruit or as economist would say an ‘incentive’. As Bhagwan in one of his Sankranti messages said in relation to the sports meet that year, “Outside student do things to get name fame and wealth, but students here do it only for Swamis satisfaction and happiness.” It’s that happiness and satisfaction of His that will give us real happiness and satisfaction; for His joy prompts that of all. As mother Teresa once said, “Even for a thousand dollars I’ll not kiss a leper, but for the love of Christ I’ll kiss a thousand lepers.” I can think of no better example of a mortal who gave up her all to serve people who she didn’t know and to an extent even loved ones cannot. She truly followed what Lord Krishna had said in the Bhagawad Gita, “Karmanyevadhi Karaste ma phaleshu kadachana,” that is, “Do actions without expecting the fruit and offer it to Him.” This is what made Arjuna, from a simple yet brave warrior, to someone who became an instrument in Krishna ’s mission. After hearing the Gita when Arjuna fought, he did not fight with an aim to vanquish his enemies or win the kingdom, he plainly did it with an aim to help Krishna establish Dharma in the world and fulfill his earthly mission.

Its not that we need to give up our worldly lifestyle and money and go and tread the Himalayan slopes, it’s but the path that we need to. We need to understand that we are just the instruments and that He is the doer. We will then see how much joy and happiness lies in doing good without expecting anything in return; when our Lords happiness and satisfaction will become ours.

As an economist rightly put it, “for every person who goes to the trouble of creating an incentive scheme, there is an army of people clever and otherwise who will inevitably spend even more time trying to beat it and reach beyond.” Then, there are only a couple of questions left to be asked, questions each of must ask himself, “Can I beat it?” and “Can I reach beyond?”

Jai Sai Ram.

Dear Reader,

What should we aspire for always? Happiness or sorrow? Swami tells us today.

Sai Inspires - 30th June 2007

What man has to aspire for today is not happiness. It is not sorrow either. In fact, happiness and sorrow are only transitory in nature. Man’s duty is to realize Divinity in the unity of happiness and sorrow. Even while you feel elated at the prospect of happiness, you will encounter sorrow. Similarly even while you feel depressed on account of sorrow, happiness will beckon you. Since ancient times, several great sages made efforts to rise above the feelings of happiness and sorrow. They recognized the fact that it was only in times of sorrow that the Divine nature in a human being manifested... More than happiness, it is sorrow that is helpful to man in several ways. It is only from sorrow, that happiness springs. The main source of happiness in man is sorrow. Just as we welcome happiness, we must welcome sorrow also..

Dear Reader,

What is the decisive factor in spiritual matters? Swami tells us today.

Did you read the article

Sai Inspires - 29th June 2007

In spiritual matters, it is experience alone that is the deciding factor. Reason is rendered dumb before the testimony of actual experience. All the arguments of logic, all the tricks of dialectics are powerless to nullify the direct effect of that inner evidence. For example, many people laugh at those who practice image worship and condemn it as superstition. But those who do worship idols have the faith that the Omnipresent Almighty is present in the symbol before them...It is a part of the inner mechanism of devotion and faith. Of course, all the 'Worship' carried out with the idea that the idol is life-less wood or stone or bronze, is so much waste of time. But if it is done in the full confidence that the image or idol is alive, saturated with consciousness and power, then, image worship can bestow the Realization of God-head itself.

When acts are done as offering to God, one will not be elated at success or disheartened by failure, for, He prompts, He helps, He grants joy or grief as He wills, as He cares. The doer will have no attachment to the fruit of the deed; so, he will not be bound to its consequence; it will leave no trace on his personality which will shape him beyond death.

Sai Inspires - 27th June 2007

You may claim that you live according to dharma (righteousness). But, your basic flaw is that your acts are not done in the spirit of dedication. If so done, they get stamped with the authentic mark of dharma. Some clever people might raise a doubt and ask: “Can we then kill and injure in the name of the Lord, dedicating the act to Him?” Well, how can a person get the attitude of dedicating all activities to the Lord without at the same time being pure in thought, word, and deed? Love, equanimity, rectitude, nonviolence - these are the attendant virtues of the servant of the Lord...To have selflessness, the spirit of self-sacrifice, and the spiritual eminence required for the dedicatory outlook, one must have first won the four characteristics of truth, peace, love, non-violence.

Sai Inspires - 26th June 2007

Love is a sacred quality. It is like nectar. A man who has tasted the immortal sweetness of Divine Love will not desire anything else in the world. Life must become a constant manifestation of love. Today love is manifested in a constricted, selfish manner. It needs to be expressed in service to society. It has to be offered to others and shared with them. Thereby love becomes a reciprocal, ever-widening experience.

Omnipotence belongs only to Sarveswara, the Lord of All. A person might feel elated that he has become the master of all arts, or owner of all wealth, or possessor of all knowledge or repository of all the scriptures, but from whom did he acquire all these? Deluding oneself that the little power one has acquired is one’s own, is indeed selfishness, conceit, pride and egosim. If a person is a genuine vehicle of power, he can be recognized by the characteristics of truth, kindness, love, patience, forbearance and gratefulness. Wherever these reside, Ahamkara (egoism) cannot subsist, it has no place. Seek, therefore, to develop these.

Do not be tempted by the low tastes of the world and the cheap regard that people bestow. Strive for the Holy Grace and love of the Lord. The affection that people shower is inconstant, for it depends on their likes and dislikes. But the Love that the Lord bears to you depends on your good qualities alone. It can also give you permanent joy. Those who are enamoured of the external will tumble into disappointment and sorrow every now and then. Beauty consists in character, not in anything else. There is nothing more charming than that.

GOD’S GREATEST MIRACLE

For this Sunday we have the transcript of a talk delivered by a student of Swami’s Institute, Sri Satyabrata Paul, during the Morning Prayer session a few days ago.

The sun humbly and gradually slid down, ready to take the final plunge into the western horizon to give warmth and light to the other half of the world. I had just completed my work and was on my way back home. All of a sudden dark water-laden clouds appeared out of nowhere and they seemed to cover the entire expanse of the sky. I received these early warning signals and hurried up my steps. I couldn’t make it in time. It started as a slight drizzle and in no time it shifted gears, and then it was a downpour. It was as the cliché goes “raining cats and dogs”. Nature was at its furious best and it kept lashing at the face of earth without any mercy whatsoever. I quickly took shelter in the open arms of a huge banyan tree. Lightening struck and it was sincerely followed by the vociferous growl of thunder.

Amidst all this chaos and confusion, a movement in the distance caught my attention. At some distance I could see a child of about 7 years struggling on the road in the rain. A closer look revealed to my horror that he had only one leg and one hand and one of his eye sockets was empty. On one hand the child was trying his best to crawl and drag himself to a safer place that would protect him from the fury of nature. And on the other hand, nature was tossing him from side to side, whipping, lashing and pelting him with water, determined not to let him move! This tussle went on for some time and I could take it no longer. I screamed out, “God, why did you forget this child of yours? Why did you forsake him? Did you not do anything for him?” A deep voice echoed across the sky and in a crystal clear tone replied’ “No. I did not forget him. I did not forsake him. I CREATED YOU.” My good old alarm clock brought me back into this so-called real world!

The dream was over but actually my thought process had just started. It set me thinking of those three words -“I created you.” The dream triggered a number of thoughts in my mind. Was I blissfully walking through life like a dead man? It was then that I came across a beautiful article that answered so many of my queries. We always crib about things. We have complains on almost every possible thing that we can set our eyes upon. In our childhood we all dream of big things in life. We dream of castles, palaces, moon, fame, spaceflights, scientists, artists and so many things. Yet sadly, somewhere down the line all those dreams remain just dreams! They simply disappear into oblivion. And then we weep for the lost childhood, we weep for the lost joy of youth, we weep for our unrealized potential, we weep for our wasted talent, Oh! We weep for our lost individuality trampled by the mob…..

Yet we forget the very first words that God whispered into our ears right after our birth. Into the ears of every new born child God whispers, “YOU ARE MY GREATEST MIRACLE. YOU ARE THE GREATEST MIRACLE IN THE WORLD.” And we all begin our earthly lives in the same fashion, we let out a wail and we cry simply because we don’t believe the words that God whispers in our ears. And we all walk through to our graves still disbelieving those words!

Just think of this - God has created each one of us with so much of thought and just try to imagine how much of hope HE has on each of us. HE has thought so much before bringing each of us into this world…..Yet we live as if the only purpose for which we were born, was to die….We walk through life in a trance. Can you imagine with what face will we meet our maker at the end of our lives? For all that HE has done for us, for all the faith that HE kept in us, inspite of ourselves, what does HE get back? Even animals have some form of gratitude at least….. If we while and fritter away our lives then our maker will not have the face and the desire to meet us….. for who on earth or in the heavens cares for a lost and destroyed masterpiece?

Let us first of all take inventory of all that we have with us. Are we blind? Can the sun rise and fall without our witness? No! We can see. The 100 million receptors that God has placed in our eyes enable us to enjoy the glitter of the morning dew on the blade of grass, the scintillating sunrise and sunset, the beauty of a rose, the innocence in a child’s smile, the colours of a rainbow and so much more. Are we paralyzed? No! We are not a tree condemned to the same plot of land while the wind and the world abuse us. We can stretch, we can run, we can jump, dance, work, play and do so much. We have everything in our hands and we can do as we please because God wanted to grant free will to humans that would help them decide their own future for themselves…

Is our heart stricken? Does it strain and leak to maintain us? No! Our heart is very strong. Touch it and we can feel the rhythm, pulsating, hour after hour, day and night, year after year, asleep or awake…. Pumping lakhs and lakhs of gallons of blood every year that too - without a break or rest! Even man has not been able to make a better machine than that…Are we feeble of mind? No! Our brain is the most complex structure in the universe. Within its few pounds are 13 billion nerve cells to help us file away every perception, every sound, taste, smell, action that we have experienced since birth. No nation’s gold is better protected. We have so much with us. Our blessings overflow our cup. Yet we are unmindful of them, like a child spoilt in luxury, since God has bestowed on us so much with generosity.

Just think of it, from our Father, in a moment of supreme love, flowed countless seeds of love, more than 400 million in number. All of them died except for one, and that one searched for its other half from the mother’s body. Two cells, each containing 23 chromosomes and within each chromosome hundreds of genes. A simple mathematical calculation will tell us how many permutations and combinations would have been possible with those two cells. God could have created over 3,00,000 billion humans, each different from the other. Yet, HE brought you, you, you and me. We all arrived in this world bringing with us the proof that God is not yet disappointed with man. God sent us to this earth as HIS hope. The problem is that we value ourselves in pennies when we are worth a king’s ransom. We have to take pride in the fact that we are not the momentary whim of a careless creator experimenting in the laboratory of life. We have been created with a purpose. We have a world to rebuild and if it requires a miracle...so what? Remember, we are God’s greatest miracle.

We have the power to think, to laugh, to will, to imagine, to dream, to speak, to sing, to dance, to sketch, to paint, to draw, to pray and to LOVE. However, God gave us one more power, a power so great that even angels don’t have it. God gave us the power to choose. With that gift HE placed us even above HIS angels… for angels are not free to choose sin. We have the choice to degenerate into the lowest forms of life, or to ascend the ladder to greater heights. We are capable of great wonders. Our potential is unlimited.

Never settle down for the crumbs of life. Remember the child who says…., “When I am a big boy…” Then the big boy says, “When I grow up…” And then grown up he says, “What’s the hurry? When I wed…” Then it changes to “When I retire…” And then retirement comes, and he looks back over the landscape covered, a cold wind sweeps over it, and somehow he has missed it all.

Half of the people living are dead bodies moving around, waiting to meet their souls whom they have safely and peacefully buried in their graves right after birth. God gave us so many talents and so much of grace. HE did not give everything to each one of us, because then there would be no fun. The best part is that HE gave something to each one of us that is unique to us. We have to find that uniqueness, that speciality. Live this day, the next day and the day after….taking the days one at a time. Use what talent you possess - the forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for those that sang best. Life can be a process of growing or ageing. Growing involves adding life to one’s years and ageing involves adding years to one’s life. A few people grow up in life, the rest just grow old… One of the greatest secrets of life is that we are all born rich but become beggars. We keep searching outside when the real treasure is already within us. Remember, we are GOD’S GREATEST MIRACLE.

Life is God’s gift to us and what we do with our life is our gift back to God. In the words of the great scientist Albert Einstein, “There are two ways to live your life… One is as though nothing is a miracle…. The other is as though everything is a miracle...”

But even after listening to all the wisdom and experience of our ancestors, yet the final choice to live our lives is one that will be ours, ours and our own.

Jai Sai Ram.

Truly speaking, it is not difficult to know what the basis of life is, and what should be the goal of life. Bliss should be the goal, and one must seek it in all earnestness. The human body is temporary; the pleasure that it can give also is fleeting. Therefore, one must seek that which is permanent, that is to say, God, or, what is the same thing, Bliss. It is meaningless to seek this Bliss by way of instruments that are impermanent. The body can give only bodily pleasure, and the mind can at best give only mental satisfaction. But these do not represent Bliss.

Worldly objects change from moment to moment. How can you claim ownership over such temporary articles? “Everything belongs to God.” With this attitude, yes, you may experience the world. There is nothing wrong with that. But while experiencing, you must inquire: “Everything belongs to God. How should the property of God be used by me?” Experience the world with your power of discrimination. If you use objects as you please, you could misuse God’s property. Use the world to engage in constructive actions, to walk the path of Truth.
