Sai Inspires - 30th April 2006

People suffer from two types of illnesses, physical and mental. A peculiar fact is that the cultivation of virtues cures both. Physical health is a prerequisite for mental health and mental health ensures physical health. An attitude of fortitude in the presence of sorrow and loss, a spirit of enthusiasm to do good, to be of service to the best of one’s capacity – these build up both the mind and the body. The body and the mind are closely interrelated.

- Divine Discourse, 9th September 1959.

Just as wholesome food gives health and strength to the body, prayer purifies the mind and strengthens the spirit. - Baba
THE SILENT MAJORITY

Loving Sai Ram and greetings from Prasanthi Nilayam. Many years ago, when Swami used to go for drives after morning Darshan, He took one day, as He often did, a devotee with Him. At that time, Swami was in Brindavan. After a while, this devotee who was sitting in the front next to the driver of the car, said to Swami, “Baba, why is there so much Adharma in the world?” Swami did not reply and remained silent. The devotee who asked the question thought, “There goes my question!”

After a while, Swami asked the devotee a question. He said, “Tell Me, what is the mood like, before I come out for Darshan?” The devotee who was happy Swami was talking to him replied, “Swami, there is absolute silence in the Darshan hall. Everyone is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Baba and is looking in the direction from which Swami would make His entry.” Swami said, “Oh, I see,” and then remained silent. The devotee riding with Swami was wondering why Swami asked him that question. Even as he was wondering, Bhagavan asked yet another question; this time it was: “Supposing before Swami came out, a child started crying; what would happen then?” The devotee was puzzled by the question, but the answer was straightforward. He said, “Swami, everyone would turn to look where the sound came from.” Again Swami responded with, “Oh, I see.”

The devotee was wondering why on earth Swami was asking such questions, but then he did not appreciate that the Lord does not do anything without a purpose. After a pause, Swami said, “You see when many are silent, no one takes notice but when one individual cries or makes some noise, all pay attention. It is the same with Dharma and Adharma. So many people are doing good work in the world but hardly anyone notices that. However, crime and things like that get a lot of publicity even though the number of people involved in such activities constitute only a minute fraction of the total population. Since there is a lot of media attention given to such acts of unrighteousness, the public imagines that Dharma is extinct. It is not, as you seem to imagine.”

So there you have it! In His own beautiful way, Swami gave an answer even though the devotee who asked the question believed Swami had put his question in the back burner. Today, we would like to comment on the “silent majority” that in its own quiet way tries to follow the path of Dharma as best as it can. The point we want to make is that in the midst of darkness, light persists. So, however bleak the present situation of the world might appear - and many things that are currently happening are indeed matters of grave concern – we should not forget that silently, millions and millions of people are, in their own imperfect way perhaps, sustaining Dharma. If that did not happen, humanity would have totally perished by now. Having said that, we must at the same time recognise that the present situation is far from healthy. Humanity must therefore pause to take careful stock of the grave dangers ahead and do something positive as well as definitive about it, especially in improving its track record in sustaining Dharma. Then alone can humanity really survive; that is the topic we would now like to briefly comment upon.

As Swami has pointed out on many occasions, in India , the word Dharma has multiple meanings. Sometimes it is used to refer to religion; sometimes it is used for describing charity, and so on. We, however, focus on the core meaning, which is righteousness or righteous action.

What is this righteousness? For many, this means following the laws of the land. Yes, the laws laid down by Society are important, and must be followed. For example, almost every country has road rules. These rules are laid down to ensure the safety of all who use the road, and they must certainly be followed. There are many such obligations, and if they do not violate one’s Conscience, then one must definitely obey them. But does righteousness end with just following the rules and norms of Society? We submit it does not; it is MUCH more. In what way? That is what we shall consider next.

Whether we like it or not, there is, as Gandhi once put it beautifully, a Moral Law governing the Universe. This Moral Law must never be flouted and that really is what righteousness boils down to. A couple of years ago, a leading politician in India who, incidentally, was also in a position of great authority, made some deals that were supposed to be questionable. A case was registered, and it slowly wound its way to the Supreme Court. After extensive hearing, the Honourable Judges concluded that though the defendant could not be convicted under existing law, the person concerned was answerable to Conscience. What this says is that though man-made rules may be weak, there is always a Higher Power that guides us and we must never fail to listen to its Voice.

All this is well known; why then do people fail to listen to the ever-present Voice of Conscience? Because of background noise. Remember the saying: “It is only in the depths of silence one can hear the Voice of God”? What does silence in this statement mean? It means that the Mind must be silent, that is to say, free from unnecessary and distracting thoughts. If one seriously wants to listen to one’s Conscience, then one must stop the constant chatter of thoughts that go on in the Mind. In other words, one must focus seriously on God and pray to Him for guidance. We would then be able hear the Voice of the Master, loud and clear - no question about that.

Few realise that righteousness is not confined to what we normally regard as major issues. To illustrate the point, we would like to consider the coffee kiosk in Prashanti Nilyam located near our Studio. We are sure most of you who have visited Prashanti Nilayam would not only be familiar with it but would have also had coffee there, sometime or the other. Next time you are at the kiosk, just watch how many people carelessly throw used paper cups on the ground, ignoring the big garbage cans placed for collecting used cups. Would these people who are so careless about littering, throw used cups on the floor of the drawing room of their houses? Prashanti Nilayam is supposed to be the House of God. Is this the respect we show to the House of God? By the way, this does not mean that one can throw litter outside the Mandir. We must never pollute this beautiful world that God has given us. God is everywhere, and thus no place is available for pollution!

Some may object to this kind of reasoning but we submit that righteousness is closely connected with sensitivity. Many devotees who come here bring servants and they are pretty rough with their servants. Some make collections in the hope they can give a big fat cheque to Swami. All such aberrations occur because we fail to pay careful attention to what Swami says. Does Swami who has created the entire Universe, really want our money? Has He not said many, many times that He does not even want our Love, and that He is fully satisfied if we leave behind with Him just one bad habit of ours? Whenever Swami goes out, say from Prashanti to Bangalore or from Kodai to Madurai or whatever, many people hire taxis so that they can follow Swami’s car all the way. There is a tremendous eagerness to follow Swami’s car, which we understand. But we wonder whether there is equal enthusiasm for following Swami’s teachings. In the ultimate analysis, which is more important? We leave you to ponder over that question.

We now come back to our starting point, namely the silent majority. You might wonder what all the above remarks have got to do with millions of people silently following Dharma. Quite a lot in fact. Let us start with us, who claim to be devotees of Swami. There can be no question that despite our shortcomings, we do form a part of the silent majority. But is it enough to be just “routinely righteous” and think that all is OK? Given the fact that the Avatar of the Age has, in various ways given us the special blessing of recognising Him, seeing, and even talking to Him on occasions, do we not have a special responsibility to humanity? We do not know what you think but we look at the matter this way.

Throughout human history, there has always been a clash between the forces of evil and the forces of good. This battle always rages within almost every single individual, and the scriptures of all religions are meant essentially to guide people on the path of righteousness. These days, however, there is a higher call and duty. Society is so highly interconnected that Adharma, though driven by a minority, is capable of affecting the majority. Just to give an example, consider the number of people engaged in the tobacco business; not many really. Yet they cause global havoc. This example can be multiplied.

You may say: “Look, what can we do about it?” Again, the history of the cigarette industry gives us the answer. Large numbers of people have said no to cigarettes and have also waged a campaign against it. As a result, in America at least, smoking has taken a nosedive. But where alcohol is concerned, the situation seems to be getting out of control. The long and short of it all is that we devotees must enlarge our vision of righteous action, and that means taking all of Swami’s teachings very seriously and being pro-active in following them. To put it differently, we must now give serious thought to the quality of our actions. It must not be just goody-goody but real GOOD!

Let us illustrate. Quality enhancement starts with very small things. Consider waiting for Darshan. It is amazing how many people compulsively talk in the Darshan line, when Swami is a bit late in coming out. Could we not spend that time looking inwards and talk to Swami the Indweller, instead of the person next to us? Swami says Love All and Hurt Never; yet how often one sees devotees being rude in conversation, especially if they are engaged in some supervisory activities? Once again, we leave you to ponder on this topic.

Special mention must be made in this connection, about corruption. Today, barring Antarctica , corruption has spread to all continents. Many think of corruption mainly in terms of offering or taking money for doing a favour. Bribery is a manifestation of corruption no doubt, but what about corrupting the minds of people, especially young ones with false advertisements, pornography, etc? Why is that not considered corruption but whitewashed as freedom of expression? All Sai devotees must be firm where corruption is concerned. If we firmly resolve to abstain from it, then even though we might be placed in very tight corners, the Lord will always come to the rescue, like the US Marines used to in films of olden times!

The long and short of it is the following:

We devotees who form a sizeable section of the “silent majority” have a profound obligation to enhance the quality of our devotion through a more firm commitment to Dharma.

We must make every effort to improve unity amongst ourselves so that our effectiveness in Society becomes greater. Today, people talk of the help Red Cross, Oxfam, etc., give in times of emergencies. Besides the emergencies caused by natural calamities etc., there is, we believe, a great Moral emergency at present. The world must see Sai devotees as the “Golden Cross” that comes to the help of people in spiritual distress.

There are many out there, looking for Moral support and for God. Somehow, quietly and without fanfare, we must help all such people to think of Sai when they need support. They must not be allowed to feel they are alone and abandoned.

The forces of Adharma may be very strong – they in fact are. However, when individuals committed to Dharma combine in large numbers, they can defeat any evil force on earth.

In the Mahabharata war, the Lord did not fight . Lord Krishna just stood aside as a Witness, giving Moral support to the forces of Dharma.

In the same way, if we Sai devotees really unite, then the Lord who is already very much here, will be with us all the way and help us to at least contain Adharma, something desperately needed at present.

People talk of the Golden age of Sai. This Golden Age will not drop like Manna from Heaven; we have to work for it. However, if each of us takes one serious step and does so in collective harmony, the Lord would then take one mighty step , and the enemy has no choice but to take to his heels!

Do you agree with our thesis that the “silent majority” can in fact become an effective majority and overpower the forces of Adharma prevailing today? What do you think? Why don’t you let us know?

Good luck and may all be well with you, till we get in touch with you again next Sunday.

Jai Sai Ram.

At present, when people meet, a curtain of envy, pride and misunderstanding intervenes between them, exaggerating the foibles of each into obstacles in the path of sympathy and brotherliness. They miss the basic unity, the essential fraternity, and the fundamental quality. Understand and tolerate, sympathise and love – that is the message.

You may complain that God is heartless, and does not respond to your prayers, give signs from His pictures, or speak from ‘nowhere’ in clear, unambiguous terms, to assuage, assure and advise. But let Me tell you, God is Love; Love is God. When even a stony cliff echoes your voice and responds when you cry, will not the sweetest, love-filled heart of God respond? When there is no response, infer that there was something wanting in the cry. Perhaps it was hollow, insincere, mere play-acting, set to a pattern, or addressed to a Being seen as separate from oneself – a Being seen as distant, a tyrant or taskmaster. Know that God is the One who is nearest and dearest to you, as dear and near as your own heart. Know this, when you pray to Him, and His answers will be vouchsafed immediately.

- Divine Discourse, 18th Oct 1969.

Prayer must come from the depths of feeling; the Lord looks for bhava (sincerity of feeling),
not bahya (outward pomp). - Baba

Sai Inspires - 27th April 2006

Humanness is a marvellous thing. It is boundless and significant, but the term ‘human’ does not refer merely to the physical body. A human being is a composite of body, mind and Atma. To perform actions with the body, to understand them through the mind and to have the Atma as witness to both of these – that constitutes human existence. Action, awareness, realisation – these three exemplify human life. Right from the outset, one should understand the nature and aim of human existence, and lead a meaningful life. It is because one has a mind, that one can be called a human being. ‘As one thinks, so does one become’.

Make the decision to do good work. It is in doing your work that you derive happiness. Work is like a flower. If we can protect the bud, it will become a flower, and that flower will ripen and become a fruit. This why we should not regards work, worship and wisdom as distinct from each other. They are inseparably connected... Whatever work you do, do it in the name of God, then your work will become worship.

The root cause of pain and pleasure, love and hate, and materialistic desires are the temptations of the mind. ‘This is mine; that is thine.’ These dualistic feelings are the sole reasons for the dsires and temptations of the mind, and the reason for this dualism is selfishness...When one only thinks of one’s own body, one’s own family, one’s own wealth and one’s own comfort, one is being a very selfish person. It is necessary to recognise that human life is meant to be spent in selfless service, and in the service of the Self. Nor is such a life of service meant for gaining name or fame, for furthering of one’s own ends, or for expanding one’s ego. Service that is done for selfish gain is no service at all.

'CAN WE HAVE THE CAKE AND EAT IT TOO?'

What are the true indices of a good person? Swami tells us today.

Sai Inspires - 23rd April 2006

Any task undertaken with self-confidence is assured of success. Self-confidence is, therefore, absolutely necessary for everyone. Moreover, if you expect others to respect and love you, you should respect and love them equally. Without respecting and loving others, you cannot expect any reciprocal feeling from them. In the same way, if you love God, God loves you. Life consists of reaction, resound and reflection. You get back exactly what you do to others. The true indices of a good person are these: keep your word, adhere to truth, show gratitude where it is due, and stay firm in your self-confidence. If you adhere to these tenets, you will overcome with ease any obstacles that may come your way. Hold on to your self-confidence and self-respect, and be ready for self-sacrifice.

- Divine Discourse, 23rd Nov 2000.

Where there is confidence there is love, where there is love, there is peace - Baba.

CAN WE HAVE THE CAKE AND EAT IT TOO?

Loving Sai Ram and greetings from Prashanti Nilayam. In recent centuries, humanity has experimented with three major socio-economic systems. They are: First the Capitalist System at one end and second the Communist System at the other extreme. In between is the third system namely, hybrid Socialistic System that India, for example, tried to operate for about forty years after its Independence. Each system has its passionate advocates and every system claims that it is the best option for Society, because it alone can provide good economic and social security besides keeping its citizens happy.

These are claims. If, however, one looks carefully at the scorecard, one would find that no system has emerged as the clear winner. The simple reason for this is that no modern socio-economic system is explicitly based on Morality. No doubt, implicit in every system is the idea that people would be honest, truthful and ethical in their behaviour. However, the enemies of man lurking inside are so powerful that they easily overcome the vague commitment to values that these systems demand. That is THE fundamental reason why all modern systems are doomed to fail; and the danger posed by such a failure can create grave crises in the future, if some core issues, hitherto swept under the rug are not frontally confronted.

Experts say that for any economic system to operate four major inputs are necessary: Trained human resource, financial capital, infrastructure and raw material. Where raw material is concerned, mankind draws from a “Bank” called Nature. All the renewable as well as the non-renewable material resources that drive the engine called economy are drawn from Nature. For thousands of years, everyone laboured under the impression that Nature is a Bank with infinite resources and that one can draw as much as one wants, any time. Lately we have discovered that this assumption is not true, and therein lies a serious problem.

Planet earth is finite, and it simply cannot provide infinite resources, just because we want it to. Lately, this truth has begun to sink in, though only in a limited fashion. For example, many have realised that oil which is one of the principle movers in modern economy, can one day run out. One can go to town on this subject of finite resources but we will not . For the present it suffices to say that consumerism which is the engine of modern economy, is very wasteful and is placing on planet earth a burden it cannot carry for too long.

What is the alternative? Swami has indicated this but before we discuss that, it is pertinent to call attention to a report published several decades ago, known popularly as the Club of Rome Report. In effect, it warns mankind as follows: “The present consumption pattern is UNSUSTAINABLE. Curtail consumption immediately and drastically; otherwise, one day, the Bank called Nature would go broke and you would not be able to draw from it.” This is the warning given not by religious or spiritual leaders but by hard-nosed economists, based on cold reasoning, and pitiless statistics and all that.

What does Swami say? He of course has been telling us a long, long time to practice CEILING ON DESIRES, not from the point of view of the Club of Rome, but from much higher spiritual considerations. When we place a ceiling on desires, it means we stop buying things we really do not need – and let’s be honest, we can jolly well do without most of the gadgets of today. We get sucked into buying them because of heavy advertisement. OK, suppose we stop buying all sorts of video games, I-pods and so on; so what? Well, that would immediately decrease the demand for mercury, cadmium, copper-beryllium, lead etc., which go into all electronic gadgets. All these are deadly materials, when they get into the environment.

Take, for example, cell phones. There are nearly a billion of them; and the models change so often. What happens to old discarded phones? They end up in India, China, Vietnam and so on, where they are dismantled by unskilled people, in the process spreading a lot of pollution into the environment. There are so many of today’s evils that get automatically eliminated, once we cap our desires. Of course, the more important thing is that people who curb desires, develop detachment and get closer to God.

Sceptics would shake their heads and say, “This is stupid. Consumerism is the engine that drives the modern world. If we curb desires, markets would collapse, unemployment would shoot up, and there would be disaster everywhere. Ceiling on desires may be nice to be talk about but it will not work; in any case, we cannot give it up. In any event, what other alternative is there?”

We will not get into a debate here about the virtues of consumerism but focus instead on the alternative. To appreciate the significance of that alternative, we must realise that in a consumerist society, products are often created using mass-production technology. Superficially this might make sense but it leads to unemployment. In decades past, when the economy grew, it also meant increased employment. But these days, economists are talking of “jobless growth of economy”. In turn this leads to a huge gap between the haves and the have-nots, as is being seen today not only in China and India, but even in the United States. So what are we to do? We have to switch from mass production to production by the masses, and anchor social life to sharing and caring rather than competition and exploitation.

This is where an important teaching of Swami comes into the picture. Swami often says: “The proper study of mankind is man.” This means that mankind must follow the same rules that Lord God has ordained for the human body. In the human body, there is no organ that is selfish. All organs perform their functions in a co-operative manner and in harmony with all the other organs rather than competing with each other and in being selfish. As Swami says, when a sweet is put in the mouth, the tongue tastes it but does not keep it to itself; it sends the sweet to the stomach. The stomach digests and send the digested matter to the intestines. The intestines allow the nutrition to leak to the blood vessels, which carry the nutrients to the muscles all over the body and so on. One can give any number of such illustrations.

So the main lesson that our body teaches us loud and clear is that individuals in society must care for and co-operate with each other instead of being ruthlessly competitive and selfish. Next, they must function in harmony for a common goal, the welfare of Society as a whole or mankind, even as the organs of the body function for the benefit of the body as a whole.

This is where the concept of Trusteeship comes into the picture. In essence, what it means is that individuals as well as groups function as Trustees of God. Both individuals and groups must take the following view: “Every skill and resource we have belongs really to God and has been given to us to be used judiciously for and on His behalf. In that sense, we are Trustees of God.”

And this is how the Trusteeship idea works. A doctor uses his medical knowledge to relieve suffering and NOT for making money. This does not mean he should not charge fees. He could and should, especially if he is engaged in private practice. However, he does not overcharge and treats for free, those who cannot afford. Whatever he does, he offers to God, as recognition of his role as a Trustee of God. Corporations too must operate in the same spirit. Thus, drug companies would focus on saving lives rather than maximizing profit as they do these days [with good PR to cover up the anti-social behaviour]. One can develop the idea in extenso, and we shall do so in Heart2Heart later.

One might ask: “But what happens to jobs?” Presently, globalisation-driven economy tends to “improve” the economy while decreasing the number of jobs at the same time. In the Trusteeship regime, mass production is replaced by production by the masses. Some might wonder: “Will this work?” It does, and the Milk Revolution in Gujarat is proof of that. Here, thousands of dairy farmers joined together to form a successful milk co-operative. So successful has this co-operative movement been that India, which once used to import milk powder from Denmark has now become the largest producer of milk in the world; and the venture has given employment to thousands and thousands of people.

If we think carefully about it, mankind DOES have an alternative to the present consumerist way of life, which is wasteful and is leading us straight to disaster. That alternative of course demands the price of simple living and a spirit of cooperation, with people caring for each other and sharing with each other, exactly as the organs in a healthy body do.

Many dismiss such an idea with the comment: “All this is nice in theory but will not work.” Well, it all depends on what people want. People go to great extent to make money, to take care of their children, to be successful in life and so on. That is because, they value the end objective. In every case, sacrifice is involved and success represents the triumph of will power, which is the key to discipline. If in the same way we attach great importance to the real purpose of human birth and life, then there should really be no difficulty in practicing a ceiling on desires and letting life be guided by the principle of Trusteeship. This principle calls for detachment and actually, in many things we do, we are detached without being aware of it. A cashier in a bank handles everyday, huge sums of money; yet he does not ever imagine it is his money. A taxi driver working for a cab company, does not think he owns the cab; and so on, there are many examples one could think of. With effort, one could extend this idea to things that one believes belongs to the person concerned. In the trusteeship regime, a rich man would regard the wealth he has as given to him by God for being used for Divine purposes.

People today might be very sceptical about such an attitude to life but you would be surprised to learn that when late Prof. Kasturi (Baba’s biographer) was born, his parents took the baby to the local Siva temple, placed the baby before the idol and prayed, “Oh Lord, You have given this child of Yours to us for looking after and bringing up. Please give us all that we need to do Your duty as best as we can.”

If we want, if we love God, if we want to avoid inflicting more wounds on Mother Earth, then we can and ought to be able to change our mindset. If we fail to do that, and want the present untenable life style then we must also get ready to pay the price for it. Scientists are very much concerned by the rapid melting of Arctic ice, and if the same happens with the ice in Antarctica also, then terrible things can happen, like half of Bangladesh getting swallowed by the sea. Experts say that even if humanity stops consuming oil today, it is not possible to stop global warming. The process started will stabilise at best; all that one can hope for is preventing of still further rises in the long term.

The bottom line is simply this: If we want to eat the cake, then it would disappear and we cannot have it! The options are clear and the time to decide is NOW. Tomorrow may be too late!

What do you think? Do you agree?

Sai Inspires - 22nd April 2006

True devotion lies in performing actions that will sanctify time. I am not asking you to serve the whole world in a big way. It is enough if you keep God in your heart and serve as per your capacity. The path of service is superior to spiritual practices like prayer, meditation and yoga. Only through service can you please God. The human body is meant for serving others, not for indulging in selfish deeds. When selfishness becomes part and parcel of your life, you become involved in sinful activities. Eschew selfishness; take to selfless service.

- Divine Discourse, 14th April 2001.

Hands That Help Are Holier Than Lips That Pray. - Baba.

Sai Inspires - 21st April 2006

You may today feel you have no need for the Lord, but the day will come when that will change. It is like when the pangs of hunger gnaw at you, you pine for food. Prepare, therefore, by washing your hearts with tears of joy so that the Lord might install Himself therein. A zamindar (landowner) may own all the fields up to the horizon on all sides, but he will deign only to sit on a patch that is clean! In the same way, when the Lord chooses the heart of a devotee, He will select a clean one. It doesn't mean all the other hearts are not His, its just that they are not clean, that is all.

- Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 1, P. 82.

The Lord judges the devotee by the purity of his heart and not by the kind of worship or japa he performs. - Baba.
