Sai Inspires - 20th May 2007

You must have contentment, whatever the gain or loss or state. This is essential. Contentment grants and increases happiness. For the contented mind, life is an endless festival, but the mind worried by desire will have no rest. With desire troubling you, concentration is impossible. Desire is the fire in your frame; it reduces you to ashes. Contentment is the effective drug to destroy it. Just as a bath in the cool waters of a stream refreshes a traveler who is exhausted and perspiring in the burning heat of day, the one suffering from the scorching fire of greed will be refreshed by the pellucid waters of contentment.

- Dhyana Vahini.

Let the wave of memory, the storm of desire, the fire of emotion
pass through without affecting your equanimity. - Baba

Every human being is expected to be a friend and well wisher of the world. But such feeling of friendship and love is lacking in man today. Just as a honeybee sucks nectar from a flower, so also man should be able to draw the water of happiness even from the well of misery. That is the true quality of love.

Sai Inspires - 18th May 2007 from Prashanti Nilayam

Dear Reader,
Loving Sairam from the Heart2Heart Team.

Swami today tells us the difference between individual love and divine love.

Did you read the article
"The Wonderful Mother That I Have"?

Sai Inspires - 18th May 2007

Any love that is related to the body has an element of selfishness in it, and this can be compared to the electric bulb we have in a room. The light of the bulb is limited by the walls of the room and this is like selfish love. Love, if it is on a higher plane, can be compared to moonlight. There is, in that case, light within and without. This light, too, is hazy and not clear. Pure love, which is entirely selfless, is like sunshine. Sunlight gives us a clear view of all objects. God's love is like sunshine. Human love is like the moonlight. Individual love is like the bulb in the room. You rise from the individual love and get into the state of mutual love.

- Summer course, 1972.

One filled with Divine Love will be fearless, will seek nothing from others,
and will be spontaneous and selfless in expressing his Love. - Baba

Sai Inspires - 17th May 2007

There must be a limit up to which you may nourish this body which can be compared to a boat. Your life is the river. On one side of the river is this world and on the other side is the other world. You have undertaken a voyage from this world to the other world, using the body as the boat and you must take care of this body until you reach the other shore. This body must be looked upon as a boat, as a means to an end but not as an end in itself.

Dear Reader,
Loving Sairam from the Heart2Heart Team.

Swami, today, enlightens us on the nature of true friendship.

Did you read the story
"Be Thankful"?

Sai Inspires - 16th May 2007

The concept of the ideal human relationship evolves when it is inspired by love and based upon truth. Sathya - truth and Prema - love form the foundation of this kind of friendship. This sort of connection is divinized with the sincere mingling of the hearts. Friendship based on altruism adopts the motto: love for all and malice towards none, keeping in view the well-being of others, overlooking personal interests. Such an attitude makes life enjoyable and helps, also, to set right the world. Such attitudes make persons voluntarily give more and receive less, whereas if egoism creeps in you, then you like to receive more and give less.

Sai Inspires - 15th May 2007 from Prashanti Nilayam

Dear Reader,
Loving Sairam from the Heart2Heart Team.

Swami, today, gives a formula for world peace.

Did you read the story
"He Steals Hearts While
His Heart Heals..."?

Sai Inspires - 15th May 2007

People talk of world peace. But how can you ensure peace in the world? Here is the formula for it. “If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character. If there is beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.” It may thus be seen that the first link in the chain leading to world peace is righteousness or dharma. Dharma is only another name for right action. But the prerequisite for right action is right thought. In other words, peace should start with the individual and gradually spread wider and wider right along the line - from the home or family to the village to the nation, etc., till finally, it encompasses the entire world.

- Summer Showers, 1990.

Only in the nation in which the goddess of Dharma (Righteousness)
and Santhi (Peace) are adored will genuine prosperity and happiness exist. - Baba

Sai Inspires - 14th May 2007 from Prashanti Nilayam

Dear Reader,
Loving Sairam from the Heart2Heart Team.

How can we eliminate differences in our mind? Swami tells us today.

Did you read this issue's
"Conversations with Sai"?

Sai Inspires - 14th May 2007

Man derives his name from the possession of the mind. As a man thinks, so he becomes. Man means mind, and mind means man. Mind is only a bundle of thoughts. Thoughts give rise to actions, and what we enjoy or suffer in this world are the consequences of these actions. It follows, therefore, that only when man’s thoughts are good will his life be good. Thoughts are highly potent. They survive the death of man. Hence it is essential to keep out bad thoughts from our minds. It is bad thoughts that separate man from man and make them forget their common divinity. When men realize that the Atma in every body is one and the same, there will be no room for differences.

- Summer Showers, 1990.

You must see that desire and hatred do not get lodged in the mind. - Baba

Sai

The path of devotion was laid down to enable man to merge with God. The goal is mergence, as the rivers know and strive for. The waters of the sea are raised by the sun as clouds into the sky, and the clouds pour them as rain back onto the earth, to flow back into the sea through many a ravine, as a stream or tributary-fed river. Merging in the Source from which one took form, is the ultimate destiny. The river has the passion of overwhelming love which leads it down the slopes until it reaches the loved one, where the lover, loved and love, all three merge in one illuminating ecstasy. Prema (highest love) is the attachment to God that does not allow anything to interfere or diminish its quality or depth.

- Divine Discourse, October 1st, 1976.

Daivapreethi (Love of God) and paapabheethi (fear of sin)
are the two requisites for sanctifying our life. - Baba
EXPANSION OF LOVE IS LIFE

For this Sunday, we have an excerpt from the book “Satyopanishad” by Prof. Anil Kumar.

Question) What is an ideal government?

Bhagavan: In an ideal government everyone willingly observes the rules and regulations of the State. Everybody discharges his or her responsibilities. 'Godment' is superior to Government. But, today we see people fighting for their rights, forgetting their duties. You should not give any scope for laziness. All employees should work most sincerely doing justice to the salaries they receive every month. Otherwise, they will be cheating or betraying their fellow-beings or the government. People should cultivate samarasyam, integration, samagrata, co-ordination, samaikyata, unity, and saubhratrata, fraternity.

Look at this piece of cloth. This is very strong because the threads are closely interwoven. But if you separate the threads, you can cut it with your finger. Everybody should know that strength lies in unity. India could achieve independence but not unity. You are free to walk waving your walking stick, so long as it does not hit the nose of another pedestrian and your freedom does not rob the independence of others. Fundamentals applicable to all must be followed. The individual is less important than the community or society. It is always better that you manage to employ yourselves in learning those things that are needed for society. Your education should help you to better the community.

Question) Swami, what is essential for us now?

Bhagavan: If you have love, it is enough. Everything will be added unto you. Service, sacrifice, humility, devotion, discipline, etc., are contained within love. It is only love that prompts and promotes all virtues. Where there is love, there will be no ego, hatred, jealousy and such other low and mean animal qualities. There was a lady in Paris. She led her life with the little money she had. One day she saw some helpless footpath dwellers shivering in the cold. She was deeply moved by this sight. Everyday she used to take a few blankets along with her and offer them to those poor, needy and forlorn. This had gone to the notice of the elders and finally the government. They decided to honour her. A few youngsters came to her to congratulate her. She said that she was not happy since she could not help everyone, when the compassionate Almighty God was helping everyone always. She further added that she felt ashamed and frustrated, as her help could not be extended to everyone.

I will tell you another story. There was in an army a soldier who lost both his legs in a war and had to move with the help of crutches. Since his service was relatively short, he was not eligible for all the retirement benefits. The Major of his unit gave him some money and asked him to return. The soldier, on his way back home, had to stop in a village and take shelter in a choultry (lodge) as it was raining heavily. The money on hand also was exhausted. Next morning, a schoolgirl who happened to pass the same street, saw this soldier, and made enquiries. The girl was deeply moved by his plight. Since then, she went to school an hour early everyday, collect some fruits on the way, sell them, and purchase a few chapatis (Indian bread) for the soldier.

After a couple of weeks, the Major happened to pass the same way and noticed the soldier. The major was surprised to see him, for even after a long time he had not yet reached home due to paucity of funds. The Major found out how the soldier was managing himself all these days. In the meantime, the girl came and served chapatis to the soldier. The Major followed her and went to her house. On seeing him her parents thought that their daughter must have done something wrong and so he had come to make an enquiry. When they were about to reprimand her, the Major intervened and said to her parents, "You are indeed very lucky! How many of us have such children with magnanimity, love, concern for the needy, and the spirit of service?" He was about to give some gold coins to her parents who said, "Sir! We don't want all this. We can live with our hard earned money. Who can guard these gold coins at home? Please leave us alone, Sir!" The Major felt happy and left for his native place where he found an eligible bridegroom for this girl and performed her marriage. This is the true wealth of love. 'Expansion of love is life. Contraction of love is death'.

When you cook any item of food, in a copper vessel, however fresh and fine the vegetables are, however clean the dhaal (lentils) and salt, however free from grit and dirt the tamarind fruits, if the vessel has no lining of tin, the food made therein will turn into poisonous stuff. The heart too is a copper vessel where you prepare various types of food for yourself and others. See that it has a good lining of Love; or else, it too will cause harm and pain, to you and the rest.

Sai Inspires - 11th May 2007 from Prashanti Nilayam

Dear Reader,
Loving Sairam from the Heart2Heart Team.

Is religion responsible for the conflicts of the present times? Swami explains today.

Did you read the article
"Pioneering Sai Medical Seva
In Alike"?

Sai Inspires - 11th May 2007

It has to be emphasized that religion is not the root cause of this state of affairs. The factional fights and fanatic hatred are due to the unruly ego that is given free play. Religion strives to destroy just this vicious tendency. So it has to be supported, not condemned. What has to be condemned is the narrow, perverted attitude of hating those who do not agree with you or who hold different opinions of the mysterious force that animates the universe. Religious wars and conflicts breed in the slime of ignorance and avarice. When people are blind to the truth that the human family is one indivisible Unity, they grope in the dark and are afraid of strange touch. The cultivation of love, alone, can convince man of this truth that there is only one caste - the caste of Humanity, and only one religion - the religion of Love. Since no religion upholds violence or despises love, it is wrong to ascribe the chaos to religion.

- Divine Discourse, October 1, 1976.

True devotees of God should not attach any importance to differences of religion, caste or sect. - Baba

Dear Reader,
Loving Sairam from the Heart2Heart Team.

Saicast has been updated with the video "Healing with Love".

Can singing bhajans be a waste of time? Swami explains today.

Bhajan Tutor?

Sai Inspires - 10th May 2007

There are some ignorant persons who laugh at bhajans and other acts of worship and characterize them as waste of valuable time! These persons might laugh at your pouring bags of paddy seeds on slushy fields and condemn that act too as waste of valuable food material! But, you know that for every bag of seed, Mother Earth will give back, in a few weeks, grain tenfold or even twenty fold. Time spent in thoughts of God or adoration of the Divine is indeed well-spent, for, it rewards you with a rich harvest of mental peace and courage.

- Divine Discourse, April 28th 1975.

When the devotee’s heart is completely filled with the
love of God, he ceaselessly chants the name of God. - Baba
