Hatred and envy distort an individual’s true charm. Anger is the fuel for all varieties of sin. Just look at yourself in a mirror when you are attacked by anger, and you will discover that you are then akin to Shoorpanakha (the demon king Ravana’s sister) of ancient times. The Rajo guna that is overpowering you then is the rakshasa (demonic) trait you must learn to avoid. Those aspiring for success in the spiritual field must therefore decide to control anger and subdue the vagaries of the mind. They must put down their mental agitations and worries and see that they do not create worry in others too. They must convince themselves that in everyone there is Divinity (Shivam), recognisable as breath (swasam); develop Universal Love (Vishwaprema) and demonstrate it in your words and deeds. I bless you to win satyamshanti and sukham (Truth, Peace and Happiness) through these means and merge in the source of all bliss.

- Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 6, Ch 38.

Sathya Sai Baba
Reduce desire, evict the ego, eject anger, and the mind will be your slave instead of being your master. Love (Prema) is the master key which can achieve all this. - Baba

The Gopikas’ adoration of Lord Krishna is Madhura Bhakthi. The gopikasalways thought of Lord Krishna and completely surrendered themselves. They believed that all their wealth, body, mind and everything they had was all surrendered to Krishna. Whatever they did, ate or talked was all in the name of Krishna. If there was any moment of time, it had to belong to Krishna. If Krishna was not there even for a moment, they regarded themselves as lifeless. When Krishna went with the cowherds, these gopikas always worried about Him and His comfort - whether He had proper protection or not, whether He had slippers on or not, whether He had any discomfort of any kind, and so on. They were thinking of Gopala and His well-being, even when they were eating their food, resting or sleeping. Because of leading such a life, over time, they turned themselves to be One with Him.

Life is a game with fire; you must derive warmth without getting burnt. So you must constantly fight the inner battle to use the senses and the intellect wisely to secure liberation rather than get entangled in their wiles. Deepavali commemorates the victory of heavenly over hellish influences, of virtue over vice, as symbolised by the victory of Krishna over Narakasura. Your life in this world is a perpetual struggle with the down-dragging impulses and the raising impulses. The Narakasura within you can be destroyed by the constant dwelling of the mind on the Lord, as the Bhagavata relates. Only when the six foes within (lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride and jealousy), which drag you down are overpowered, the flame of wisdom can shine, clear and bright. To demonstrate this today, lamps (deepas) are lit in a row on every house.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 11,1966.

Sathya Sai Baba
Fill your hearts with the light of love so that the evil qualities of hate, greed
and conceit find no place therein. - Baba

Sathya Sai Baba

Our festivals and holy days should be observed in the right spirit, with an understanding of their inner significance. The destruction of the demon Narakasura symbolises the destruction of evil and the restoration of good. Observe Deepavali as a day for getting rid of all the bad qualities in us. Many Gopikas who were imprisoned by Narakasura were freed by Lord Krishna on that day. This implies that we must free the imprisoned good qualities within us and allow them to be manifested effulgently. As long as demonic qualities remain within people, they will be immersed in darkness. Bad qualities and thoughts must be got rid of altogether. When you realise the impermanence of the body and all the sensory experiences, you will acquire detachment (vairagya). Discharge your duties, treating the body as a God-gifted instrument for this purpose.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 9,1988.

Good character is built up only by the constant practice of good actions. - Baba

Sathya Sai Baba

While Lord Krishna was growing up, one of the Gopalas would come up to Him and say, “Dear Krishna, please sing, sing to my heart’s content. Take the essence of the Vedas and pour it through your flute and play a beautiful song to mesmerise my heart.” The Gopalas regarded Lord Krishna as the ocean of love, and themselves as drops of water which have come out of this ocean of love. Their sole purpose was to take their own lives and merge it with the infinite ocean of love. So long as we hold a drop of water in the palm of our hand, it remains a drop of water; but if we take this drop of water and mix it with the ocean, the drop does not exist any more, as it loses its individuality and merges with the ocean. What better objective can there be in life beyond wanting to merge with the Lord?

- Summer Roses on Blue Mountains, 1976, Ch 14.

To earn the grace of the divine, the easiest way is to surrender at the Feet of the Lord. - Baba

Sathya Sai Baba

To light a lamp, you need four elements - a container, oil, wick and a match box. If any one of them are missing, you cannot light the lamp. This lit lamp can, however, remove only the external darkness. How do you remove the darkness within the heart? It can be removed only by the Light of Wisdom (Jnana Jyoti). How to light the spiritual light, the light of wisdom? It needs four elements too. Detachment (Vairagya) is the container. Devotion (Bhakti) is the oil. One-pointed concentration (Ekagrata) is the wick. Knowledge of the Supreme Truth (Jnana) is the match stick. Without all the four, the light of Spiritual Wisdom cannot be got. Of the four, the primary prerequisite is the spirit of renunciation (Vairagya). Detachment is absence of attachment to the body. The ego-feeling, which makes one think of ‘I’ all the time, should be given up. Without this detachment, knowledge of scriptures is of no avail.

- Divine Discourse, 9 Nov 1988.

I have come to light the lamp of Love in your hearts, to see that it shines
day by day with added lustre. - Baba
